What book has a sort of possessed/sentient house, where the main character asks the house for the seasons?

I remember years and years ago my teacher read my cl a book where the main character I think crosses into another world and finds a house that is possessed/alive that can grant wishes. And the one part I can remember for sure is that the main character asks for the one thing the house cannot grant, the seasons. I only vaguely remember the details, however.
